The Genesis of Designist
On January 1, 2017, my friend (and ex-manager) Hasan Habib and I launched one of the first companies in Pakistan to provide UXR and UX services. Coming from a graphic design background, I was deeply passionate about starting a venture with him. Why did I do it? To break the stereotype imposed by my parents that we’re meant for jobs, not business. To prove that entrepreneurship isn’t just risky trouble but also a path to difficult personal and professional growth.
Year of Enlightment
The first year of my startup journey was filled with doubts and uncertainty. I was skeptical about my venture and goals. However, during the first three months of the company, we were able to secure a good deal with a company to provide them with services. During this time, I focused on improving my management and verbal skills, as well as starting documentation.
Year of Acceleration
I referred to this period as the “Year of Zero” because it was marked by failure on all fronts. There was significant mismanagement, a lack of focus, and unclear goals. It became increasingly challenging for me to manage myself and the growing team. As someone who had never worked as a manager before, I struggled to handle the responsibilities effectively. Books offered little help as they promised.
Year of Redefining
In light of this, I decided to rethink and redefine my purpose. I spent hours writing in my diary and then traveled to America, coinciding with my elder brother’s wedding. During my travels, I created many mind maps and realized one crucial thing: I wasn’t yet ready to be a senior leader or an entrepreneur. This realization struck me deeply, prompting me to return to the drawing board, learn from others, and become an explorer of new opportunities.
